3. Fonts

One of the first issues we should consider when approaching the study of pronunciation is the system of symbols used to represent sounds. This section presents the web pages that offer information and tools to facilitate the connection between spelling and sound. The references are based on the IPA sources commonly used in pronunciation forums.

Una de las primeras cuestiones que se nos plantean al adentrarnos en el estudio de la pronunciación es el sistema de símbolos utilizado para representar los sonidos. Este apartado recoge aquellas páginas que aportan información y herramientas para facilitar la conexión entre grafía y sonido. Las referencias seleccionadas se basan en las fuentes de la International Phonetic Association (IPA) que son las más habitualmente empleadas en todos los foros sobre el estudio de la pronunciación.

3.1. IPA Fonts

“The International Phonetic Association” webpage. As well as providing a complete table of all the phonetic symbols and descriptions of each (be aware that this is for all languages, not just English), it also offers the relevant fonts to install on your computer so that they can be transcribed by any word processor or integrated into web pages.
Given the large quantity of characters and codes, the basic fonts for transcribing English are listed below:
IPA fonts (SIL manuscript IPA 93): These are accessed with the numeric keypad (not the one at the top of your keyboard, but on the right on tabletop keyboards and letter and number keyboards on laptops).

Página de “The Internacional Phonetic Association”.

This page was created by David Brett and includes a phonetic interactive keyboard. You can type the phonetic symbols by simply clicking the keys on which each symbol appears.

Página de David Brett que incluye un teclado virtual que permite escribir directamente los símbolos fonéticos con sólo un click de ratón en cada una de las teclas en que aparecen representados.

In addition, Internet offers a series of pages that deal with pronunciation in a less global way. They are not complete courses, but rather a selection of content or activities highlighting particular aspects of pronunciation. While the user may have to invest time in deciding which of these are of interest or relevance to them, these pages do offer interesting approaches and opportunities for practice.

La red ofrece también una serie de páginas que tratan el tema de la pronunciación de una forma menos global. No constituyen un curso completo sino una selección de contenidos o actividades que enfatizan determinados aspectos de la pronunciación. Aunque su organización requiere una mayor dedicación por parte del usuario para discernir lo que resulta de interés para sus fines, pueden aportar interesantes enfoques y oportunidades para la práctica.

  1. Reading is good "Passive" way of improving vocabulary, but when you are resorting to making lists, that is "Active" method. Problem with active method of learning words is that it is cumbersome and boring, and you doing retain and unless you use it in writing sentences to apply the word, very little chance is that you increase your lexical size.
Improve Your Vocabulary - VocabMonk is an active learning tool which is personalised and makes sure you grasp the learnt words by applying it. It is lot of fun too as you can play vocab challenges with your friends.
    Give it a shot!
