8. Monographs / Monográficos

The following is a series of monographic courses-almost all of them have been designed by professors from prestigious universities in the form of tutored courses-that offer an in-depth study of determined aspects of pronunciation. These interesting courses can supplement advanced phonetic programmes or enhance our knowledge of specific content.

The University of London offers us this marvellous tutorial on plosives.

8.3.1. Articulation/Articulación (Part 1)
This tutorial presents the basics on the articulation of plosives.
If you complete this tutorial you should be able to
•describe the articulation of any plosive sound in simple terms
•recognise the phonetic symbols which are used to represent plosives
•distinguish plosives from other speech sounds
•recognise plosives from diagrams of their articulation


8.3.2. Aspiration and voicing/Aspiración y sonoridad (Part 2)
This tutorial on plosives deals with aspiration and voicing.
If you complete this tutorial you should be able to:
•distinguish aspirated plosives from unaspirated ones
•recognise aspiration from speech pressure waveforms
•draw diagrams of aspirated and unaspirated plosives
•understand the concept of voice onset time (VOT)

These are thorough, guided courses on occlusive consonants that include sound files and diagrams.

As seen before in the section on phonetic courses, Peter Ladefoged introduces a monograph on vowels and consonants divided into 16 units of examples. Sound files are attached.

8.8. American Accent Training: Pronunciation


American Accent Training is recommended as a continuation following the previous web page mentioned in paragraph 8.7 and that on intonation in paragraph 9.4,. The main defining features of American pronunciation are mentioned, highlighting the differences in vowels and consonants, especially T, R, L and TH.
