13. Transcription / Transcripción

Once you are familiar with phonetic symbols, transcription practice should help you to develop your pronunciation skills. Exercises and activities for English-phonetics and phonetics-English transcriptions are the perfect complement to put concepts into practice. The selection presented here covers aspects ranging from suggestions on how to carry out transcriptions to tasks with correction and feedback.

You can check the transcription afterwards. Although somewhat limited, this could be a good start to transcription practice. Vowel length is not represented by two points, but a picture explaining equivalences is attached.

These are brief online transcription exercises (phonetic-English) with self-correction. Referred to in the corresponding section, they are part of the course in Spanish. Its level is basic.

13.4. Transcriber

John Maidment, University of London, created this programme that allows transcriptions of words, indicated by sound, text or both. Self-correction is included. Although not used for these transcriptions, a chart with IPA symbols and some word examples of the sound they represent are attached. British English.

13.5. Phthong

This programme, developed by Henry Rogers and Michael Stairs (University of Toronto) was designed for the teaching of phonetic transcription. The model is of English spoken in Toronto. It has two types of exercises: in the first a phonetic word is shown and its equivalent in English has to be identified, and in the second operation reversed. Limited to a series of selected sounds.

Excellent site, with exercises at different levels of transcription. They are carried out with a phonetic keyboard (Section 3.3) included in the web page. A spoken version can be accessed. After writing the answer, you are told if it is correct or not. After the second attempt, it offers the solution and highlights the errors.

16. Dictionaries / Diccionarios

Given their tremendous potential, electronic dictionaries need to be used much more for pronunciation practice. Providing transcriptions of each word with their corresponding phonetic symbols (and in some cases, the audio version) they are an invaluable aid for the comprehension and assimilation of new terms.

This dictionary provides the phonetic transcription of all its entries. Variations in American English are always specified. The phonetic version does not appear by default, so once the meaning of the word you are searching is selected, you need to click on the section ‘show phonetics’.


Ofrece la transcripción fonética de todas sus entradas. Si hay variante en inglés americano se especifica. La versión en fonética no aparece por defecto por lo que una vez seleccionada la acepción de la palabra buscada, es necesario pulsar el apartado show phonetics.


16.2. Rhyme

This is an interesting dictionary which offers words that rhyme with the input and coinciding with the number of syllables indicated. It also offers the possibility of placing the rhyme at the beginning or at the end of the word. It can be a useful tool for pronunciation exercises.

This is a dictionary with audio files, where you only need to type the word and click ‘go’. Together with the definition, a sound icon leads us to the audio version of the selected word.

Diccionario de pronunciación en ingles británico estándar, con variantes del inglés universal. La pronunciación se puede escuchar online y normalmente utiliza como mínimo dos recursos basados en transcripciones IPA y/o archivos de sonido.
